Motorcycles & Coffee

The Craft Behind the Carafe

Last week I jumped on Facetime with Nick to sort through some BlackCat business. Sigh. Did you guys know that running a startup isn’t all drinking good coffee and making cool Instagram videos?

Between all of the 16 hour days, low-account-balance alerts, and equipment failures, every day is actually an adventure… and we wouldn’t have it any other way right now.

While we were Facetiming, Nick poured another cup of coffee at 8pm and explained the meticulous process he has for roasting our own BlackCat line. Because we focus on small-batch, craft coffee, Nick spends an exhausting amount of hours every week dialing in the right tasting notes and level of roast, and hand-packing every pound. While Nick is roasting, Cory is prepping the screen printing rig for them to screen BlackCat gear together. And this is all in-between maintaining full-time jobs and being musicians.

So what’s their incentive for the sleepless nights of starting a new business?

Spoiler alert: It’s not really about the coffee.

See, when you’re not doing the things you were made to do, it aches in every fiber of your being. Thoughts of dreams fulfilled consume your every moment, conversation, and emotion. And when you finally find a way to live out what you were made for, everything is an opportunity and anything feels possible.

At BlackCat, we were made to build inclusive community. We were made to make people on the outskirts feel like they belong. We were made to take just one thing in their day, and make it easy and reliable. And we’ve found that coffee opens the door to those things.

For most people, drinking coffee is part of a daily routine: on your way to work, on your way home, all-nighters, early mornings, study sessions, meetings and social gatherings. Not only that, but coffee is used as a vehicle for conversation-- grabbing a cup of coffee with a friend or a date, potential boss or business partner is now a way of life. So we put a lot into how we craft it for all of you.

Our community and our business has now grown beyond our current capacity. It’s a good and exciting problem to have. We just have to get more inventive!

That’s why, this Friday, we have a special announcement for this upcoming season at BlackCat. We can’t wait to share it with you, and we can’t thank you enough already for your continued partnership. Stay tuned ☺ -- Shannon
